How to find blurry and dark photos on iPhone

The Photos app has no album for out-of-focus, dark or blank shots. What to look for, how to check by hand, and how to review on-device suggestions before anything is deleted.

Every camera roll collects them: the shot taken just as someone moved, the concert photo that came out almost black, the frame captured by accident inside a pocket. They are easy to scroll past and tedious to hunt down one by one, because the Photos app has no album or search filter for blurry or dark pictures.

This guide covers what is worth a second look, how to check your library by hand, and how Pruna gathers these shots in one list so you can decide what stays.

Three kinds of shots worth a second look

  • Blurry. Motion blur or missed focus across the whole frame. A portrait with a deliberately soft background is not blurry: the subject is still sharp.
  • Dark. Pictures that are nearly black all over, usually taken by mistake or in very low light. A night photo with street lights or a lit stage is different: it is dark overall but has real content.
  • Blank. Frames with almost nothing in them, such as a covered lens, the inside of a pocket or a ceiling taken by accident.
  • Before you delete, ask one question. Is this the only picture of that moment? A slightly soft photo of someone you rarely see can matter more than a sharp one of a view.

Checking by hand in the Photos app

Without a tool, the most reliable method is to go through the library a stretch at a time. Pinch the grid to show smaller thumbnails, look for frames that are grey, black or smeared, and open each candidate full screen, because a thumbnail can hide soft focus and can make a good night shot look empty.

That works for a few hundred photos. For a library of tens of thousands it takes hours, and it is easy to lose your place halfway through.

Reviewing blurry and dark shots with Pruna

  1. Open Pruna and allow access to your photos. The analysis runs on the iPhone and nothing is uploaded. Only photos are checked for sharpness and brightness; videos are not part of this category.
  2. On the Clean tab, open Blurry & dark. Photos are listed newest first, each with its size, and nothing in this category is selected for you.
  3. Tap a thumbnail to see the photo full screen before you decide. If you are unsure, compare it with the original in the Photos app, where you can zoom in.
  4. Tick the photos you want to remove, or use Select all and untick the ones to keep. To take a photo off the list for good, touch and hold it and choose Keep; it will not be suggested again.
  5. Confirm the deletion in the iOS prompt. The photos move to the Recently Deleted album of the Photos app, where they stay for 30 days and can be recovered.

How Pruna decides what to list

  • Sharpness is measured on the sharpest part of the frame, so a portrait with a blurred background is not counted as blurry.
  • A photo counts as dark only when it is dark overall and has no bright areas, so night shots with lights stay out of the list.
  • Screenshots and photos you marked as favourites are never listed here. A shot that belongs to a group of duplicates or similar photos appears in that group instead, so each photo shows up in one place only.
  • The rules lean towards not flagging a photo. Some soft or underexposed shots will not appear; you can still catch them in Swipe or in the Photos app.

Limits worth knowing

  • Smart Clean includes this category by default. If you would rather judge each photo yourself, review Blurry & dark first or switch its row off in Smart Clean before you confirm.
  • With Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, some photos are kept only in iCloud. They may be left out of the analysis until they are on the iPhone again.
  • With iCloud Photos, deleting a photo removes it from every device signed in to the same Apple Account. It goes to Recently Deleted on all of them first.
  • Scanning and browsing the list are free. Deleting photos is part of Pruna Pro, whose price is shown in the App Store before you subscribe.
